Canada’s commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth.
been following events leading up to yesterday, march 28, when the annual canadian seal slaughter was to commence. Bad weather kept the sealers off the ice, and a spark of hope leapt up in everyone's hearts, that
maybe, maybe, there was still a chance....
a few hours later the weather cleared up and the sealers set off to club to death
400,000 baby Harp Seals, 62 000 Grey Seals, 8,200 Hooded Seals, and 73,000 "experimentals".
Over the past three years, nearly a million seal pups have been slaughtered for their fur. (95% of them under 3 months of age)
The last time sealers killed this many seals—in the 1950s and '60s—close to two-thirds of the harp seal population was wiped out.
